When Ojasvi Khurana, a 24-year-old engineer from Bengaluru, planned an impromptu three-week vacation in April, her main concern was finding a country that would allow her entry on short notice.

She chose to travel solo across Thailand’s lush highlands and white-sand beaches, thanks to the Thai government lifting visa requirements for Indian travelers and several other countries last November. “I booked my tickets to Bangkok just a few days before leaving India because no visa was needed,” Khurana says. “I’m really glad that worked out.”

Thailand’s decision to ease visa restrictions has proven beneficial for the country. This year, bookings have increased by 35%, according to Thailand’s tourism ministry, with a record number of Indian tourists contributing to this surge.

Khurana’s experience reflects this trend, as she noticed many of her compatriots during her travels. Initially wanting to avoid crowded places, she frequently encountered fellow Indians and made new friends, especially in Chiang Mai.

The surge in Indian tourists has had a positive economic impact on Thailand’s tourism sector. Local businesses, from street vendors to luxury hotels, have benefited from the increased footfall, contributing to the country’s economic recovery post-pandemic.

For many Indian travelers, Thailand’s visa exemption has opened up new travel possibilities, encouraging more Indians to explore its diverse landscapes and vibrant cities.
