Can a person on a US work visa legally own a gun?

In the United States.

A person with a work visa (non-immigrant visa) generally cannot legally own or possess a firearm under federal law.

However, there are specific exceptions. A non-immigrant visa holder may possess a gun if they:

• Have a valid state-issued hunting license or permit

• Are an official representative of a foreign government

• Are a foreign law enforcement officer on official duty

• Fall under other narrow exemptions defined by federal regulations

Even if they meet these federal exceptions, they must also comply with state laws, which can be more restrictive.
