Canada PR: Can Internship Extend 1-Year Post-Study Visa?
No, you cannot add a 6-month internship** to a 1-year Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) to qualify for Permanent Residency (PR) in Canada.
Why?
For most PR pathways (like Express Entry - Canadian Experience Class), you need at least 1 year (12 months) of full-time skilled work experience in Canada under NOC TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3.
What Counts?
✅ PGWP Work – Only work done after graduation on a PGWP counts.
❌ Internships During Studies – Co-op or internship experience during your studies does not count toward PR eligibility.
Solution:
• Find a Skilled Job Quickly – Start working in an eligible NOC job immediately after graduation.
• Extend Your Stay – If your PGWP is only 1 year and you need more time to qualify for PR, consider getting a LMIA-based work permit or applying under a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).
• PNP Options – Some provinces offer PR pathways with less than 1 year of experience.
If PR is your goal, a 2-year program (to get a 3-year PGWP) is a safer option.
