How Do Immigrants Get a Canada Work Visa?
To get a work visa in Canada as an immigrant, applicants generally follow one of two main pathways: employer-sponsored work permits or open work permits, depending on their eligibility and purpose.
1. Employer-Specific Work Permit (Closed Work Permit)
This is the most common type for foreign workers.
Steps to apply:
• Get a job offer from a Canadian employer.
• The employer may need to obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), proving that no Canadian worker is available for the job.
• Once approved, the employer gives you a job offer letter and LMIA number.
• You then apply online for a work permit through the IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) website.
• If approved, you receive a work permit valid only for that employer and job location.
2. Open Work Permit
Allows you to work for any employer in Canada (with some exceptions). You do not need an LMIA or job offer.
Who qualifies:
• Spouses or common-law partners of skilled workers or international students
• International students who graduated from a Canadian designated learning institution (Post-Graduation Work Permit)
• Applicants under programs like the International Experience Canada (IEC) or humanitarian programs
3. Eligibility Criteria
• Valid passport
• Medical exam (if required)
• Police clearance certificate
• Proof of qualifications (education, experience)
• Proof of sufficient funds (in some cases)
• No criminal or immigration violations
4. Processing Time
Varies based on country of application and type of work permit—typically ranges from a few weeks to several months.
Additional Notes:
• French-speaking skilled workers may have special options under the Francophone Mobility Program.
• Some provinces have Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) that provide work permits or PR pathways for skilled workers.
