Thailand Visa: Work Visa Process for South Africans
"To legally work in Thailand, South African citizens must apply for a Non-Immigrant B Visa at the Royal Thai Embassy in Pretoria, followed by obtaining a work permit after arrival in Thailand. The process requires cooperation between you and your Thai employer.
1. Secure a Job Offer in Thailand
You must first receive an official job offer from a Thai employer or organization.
Thailand does not issue work visas without an employer sponsor.
2. Your Employer Prepares and Sends Required Documents
The Thai company must provide you with:
WP3 pre-approval letter (needed before applying for the visa)
Employment contract
Company registration documents
Invitation letter
Tax and shareholder information
Copy of employer’s ID or passport
The employer submits the WP3 request to the Thai Ministry of Labour.
Once approved, you receive the WP3 approval number to use for your visa application.
3. Prepare Your Personal Documents in South Africa
You will need:
Passport (valid at least 6 months)
Completed visa application form
Passport-size photos
Copy of your employment contract
WP3 document
Police clearance (if requested)
Proof of qualifications (degree, certificates)
Financial evidence (only sometimes required)
4. Apply at the Royal Thai Embassy in South Africa
Submit your application at:
Royal Thai Embassy – Pretoria
(Physical submission or appointment may be required)
Processing time is usually:
5–10 working days, depending on your documentation.
Visa type issued:
Non-Immigrant B – Single Entry (valid 90 days)
5. Travel to Thailand
Once your visa is approved, you can enter Thailand and begin the second part of the process.
6. Apply for the Work Permit in Thailand
Within 90 days of arrival, your employer must help you apply for a Thai Work Permit at the Ministry of Labour.
Required documents will include:
Work visa
Passport
Medical certificate (Thai clinic)
Company corporate documents
Photos
Employment contract
Once issued, you may start working legally.
7. Extend Your Visa in Thailand
After receiving your work permit, you can apply for a 1-year extension of stay based on employment.
You must also:
Report your address every 90 days
Renew your work permit annually
Update the work permit if you change employer or role"
