Can You Change a US Visitor Visa to a Student Visa?
Yes, it is possible to change a visiting visa (B1/B2) to a student visa (F1) while in the U.S., but it requires meeting specific conditions and following a legal process.
You must first apply to and receive acceptance from a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-certified institution. Once accepted, the school will issue you a Form I-20 (Certificate of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status).
After receiving the I-20, you must file Form I-539 (Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status) with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Include the required documents, such as proof of financial support, a copy of your Form I-20, and an explanation of why you want to change your visa status.
While your application is pending, you must maintain your current visa status. Note that traveling outside the U.S. while your application is being processed may void the change of status request. Approval is not guaranteed and depends on meeting all eligibility criteria and providing convincing evidence.
