My Indian passport with the valid US visa is about to expire. The new passport will have a different number. Will I have to get the US visa stamped in the new passport as well?
Expiring Passport with US Visa: Do I Need Restamping?
No, you do not need to get the US visa stamped again in your new Indian passport.
Here’s how it works:
1. Visa validity remains – Your valid US visa in the old passport is still usable until its expiration date.
2. Travel requirement – You must carry both passports:
o Old passport (with the valid US visa)
o New passport (with the new passport number and validity)
3. At immigration – Officers will check your new passport for identity/validity and your old passport for the visa. Both together are considered valid.
4. Re-stamping not needed – Unless your old passport is badly damaged, the visa remains valid even if the passport has expired.
If you prefer, you can apply for a new visa in the new passport, but it is not mandatory.
