UK study visa to work visa: What happens after expiry?

In the UK, after your Graduate Visa (Post-Study Work Visa) expires (which allows you to work for 2 years after graduation, or 3 years for PhD holders), you have several options:

1. Switch to a Skilled Worker Visa (Most common route)

• If you find a job with a UK employer who is a licensed sponsor, you can apply for a Skilled Worker Visa.

• Your job must meet the salary threshold (usually £26,200/year or £10.75/hour, but lower for shortage occupations).

• This visa can lead to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after 5 years.

2. Apply for a Global Talent Visa

• For highly skilled individuals in science, engineering, tech, arts, or academia.

• No job offer required, but you need an endorsement from a recognized UK body.

3. Start a Business (Innovator Founder Visa)

• If you have a business idea endorsed by an approved UK body, you can apply for this visa.

4. Family Visa or Other Routes

• If you marry a UK citizen or have family in the UK, you may be eligible for a family visa.

• If your employer doesn’t sponsor you but you qualify for another visa category, you can apply accordingly.

5. Leave the UK

• If none of the above apply, you’ll have to leave when your Graduate Visa expires.

To stay legally, it’s best to secure a Skilled Worker Visa before your Graduate Visa expires.
