Travellers from Kolkata looking to visit Europe have some good news. The European Commission’s new “visa cascade” program makes it easier for Indians to obtain Schengen visas. Previously, Schengen visas were typically valid for shorter durations.
Under the new system, travellers can now apply for two-year Schengen visas. To qualify, applicants must have lawfully obtained and used two Schengen visas within the preceding three years. This program also offers a path to even longer validity periods. After successfully using a two-year visa, travellers can apply for a five-year visa.
This change is expected to benefit travellers in a few ways. First, it allows for better trip planning. Travellers can now plan multiple European vacations within a two-year period without needing a new visa for each trip. Additionally, the long-term visa offers more flexibility, allowing travellers to make spontaneous European getaways.
Travel agents believe this will lead to a surge in tourism. Travellers with a valid multi-entry visa are more likely to book flights and exchange currency, boosting the tourism industry. While travel agents may see a decrease in application processing work, they anticipate the increase in travel will make up for it.
