Step-by-step guide

Let us walk you through the process

  • Before applying for a visa to Australia, determine the purpose of your visit, such as tourism, work, study, or family migration, to select the appropriate visa category.
  • Visit the official website of the Department of Home Affairs or consult the nearest Australian embassy or consulate for detailed information on visa categories, requirements, and application procedures.
  • Review the specific eligibility criteria, documentation requirements, and financial obligations for the chosen visa type to ensure a successful visa application for Australia.

Begin these steps as soon as possible after your education provider has confirmed you have successfully completed your course.

Make sure you have a passport

You need a valid passport for this visa. If you plan to get a new passport, do so before applying for this visa.

Check your visa conditions

If you have a current visa with a 'No further stay' condition 8534 or 8503 on your current visa, you can’t apply for this visa online. You will need to apply for and have the condition waived using Form 1447 No Further Stay waiver. You will then need to submit an ImmiAccount technical support form.

To see your conditions see VEVO.

Organise health exams

You might need to have health examinations. You can complete them before you apply or you can wait until after you apply.

Find out the examinations you need and how to arrange them if you want to have them before you apply.

Get help with your application

Only some people can help you with your application. If you appoint someone to give you immigration assistance they must be:

You can appoint anyone to receive documents on your behalf relating to your visa matter.

Arrange a skills assessment

A relevant assessing authority must assess your skills as being suitable for your nominated occupation.

Each authority assesses the skills against its individual professional standards.

Contact the relevant authority to find the requirements for your occupation

The relevant authority for your occupation can be found in the list of eligible skilled occupations. Most authorities will only give a positive assessment if you have a post-secondary qualification. Authorities may accept relevant work experience for some occupations.

Organise your skills assessment with the relevant authority
  • Organize your skills assessment with the relevant authority. Please note that each assessment is only valid until the expiry date on the assessment, or 3 years from the date of issue, whichever comes first.
  • Keep in mind that you can get more than one skill assessed, but you can only have one nominated occupation when you apply. Additionally, you cannot change your occupation after you are invited to apply for a points-tested skilled migration visa.
  • Remember that assessing authorities are only responsible for undertaking skills assessments. They cannot help you find a job or tell you if you are likely to get a visa.
  • Some authorities provide provisional or subclass 485 skills assessments. However, these assessments are only for subclass 485 visas and cannot be used to apply for a points-tested skilled migration visa.

Provide proof of your study, qualifications, skills assessment, identity and relationships. You will also need to provide documents for your family members.

Provide accurate information

Provide accurate information. See what happens if you can't prove your identity or don't provide true information.

Identity documents

Submit passport pages with personal details, photo, and issue/expiry dates, along with national identity card and proof of name change (e.g. marriage certificate or official documents).

Study documents

To prove completion of your course, provide a letter from your education provider with start and end dates and CRICOS code, along with certified course transcripts. If you've used course credit to meet Australian study requirements, provide those details too.

English language requirement documents
Skills assessment documents

(Note: this is not required for applications lodged between 1 July 2022 and 30 June 2023)

Provide evidence that your skills have been assessed as suitable for your nominated occupation by the relevant assessment authority.

If you haven’t got one yet, you can provide evidence that you have applied to the relevant assessment authority to have your skills assessed and send the completed assessment before we make a decision on your visa.

Attach the completed assessment as soon as you can in ImmiAccount.
