Costa Rica has unveiled a new Digital Nomad Visa aimed at attracting remote workers, entrepreneurs, and freelancers from around the world, offering them the chance to live and work in the country for up to one year. The visa, with a base application fee of just $100 (under ₹8,800), positions Costa Rica as one of the most cost-effective destinations for digital nomads.
To qualify, applicants must work for a company or clients based outside Costa Rica and meet the minimum monthly income requirement — $3,000 (₹2.62 lakh) for individuals or $4,000 (₹3.49 lakh) for those applying with dependents. Additional requirements include a valid passport, proof of income for the past 12 months, health insurance covering the entire stay, a criminal background check, and Spanish translations of all documents.
The application process is fully online, with approvals typically issued within 15–30 days. Once granted, visa holders must register their stay and obtain a DIMEX residency card upon arrival. While the base fee is under ₹8,800, a separate visa issuance fee of about $90 (~₹7,900) also applies.
Officials say the program is designed to boost tourism and the local economy by attracting skilled professionals who can contribute to Costa Rica’s vibrant communities while enjoying its renowned natural beauty and “pura vida” lifestyle.
