In a move aimed at attracting global remote talent, Spain has officially introduced its Digital Nomad Visa, allowing foreign nationals—including Indian citizens—to live and work remotely from popular Spanish cities like Barcelona, Madrid, or Ibiza for as little as ₹8,000 (€80–100) per year.

The visa forms part of Spain’s broader strategy to boost its economy by welcoming skilled professionals who work for overseas employers or freelance clients outside of Spain. Designed specifically for non-EU/EEA citizens, this visa allows applicants to reside in Spain for up to one year initially, with the possibility of renewing it for up to five years.

Key Features of the Digital Nomad Visa

  • Low Annual Fee: The visa costs approximately ₹8,000 per year, making it one of the most affordable digital nomad programs in Europe.
  • Remote Work Eligibility: Applicants must work for non-Spanish companies or clients, though up to 20% of income may come from Spanish sources.
  • Financial Requirements: Individuals must show a monthly income of at least €2,763 (~₹2.76 lakh), which is 200% of Spain’s minimum wage. Additional income is required for dependents.
  • Educational/Professional Proof: Applicants must hold a recognized university degree or have at least three years of work experience in their field.
  • Mandatory Health Insurance: Private health insurance coverage valid in Spain is required without any coverage gaps or waiting periods.

Tax Benefits and Long-Term Options

Digital nomads living in Spain for more than 183 days per year may qualify for a special tax regime, commonly known as the “Beckham Law,” which offers a flat 24% tax rate on income up to €600,000—a significant advantage compared to Spain’s standard progressive tax rates.

In addition, successful applicants receive a Foreign Identity Number (NIE) and a residence card (TIE), enabling them to open bank accounts, rent property, and integrate into local life.

Application and Processing

The application must be submitted through a Spanish consulate or embassy in the applicant’s home country. Required documents include:

  • A valid passport
  • Proof of employment and income
  • Degree or experience certificates
  • Criminal background check
  • Private health insurance
  • A completed visa application form

Processing time ranges from 10 days to 6 weeks, depending on the applicant’s location and documentation.

A Gateway to Europe for Remote Workers

Spain’s new Digital Nomad Visa offers remote professionals the unique opportunity to work from some of Europe’s most iconic and vibrant cities while enjoying a high quality of life at a modest cost. With its combination of affordability, tax advantages, and lifestyle appeal, the program is expected to attract thousands of digital workers from around the globe.
