India’s passport has recorded its highest-ever position on the Henley Passport Index, rising eight places to rank 77th globally. The improvement reflects growing international mobility for Indian citizens, who can now enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 59 destinations worldwide.

The Henley Passport Index, which ranks countries based on the number of destinations accessible without a prior visa, shows a shifting global landscape. While Asian nations such as Japan, Singapore, and South Korea continue to dominate the top spots, traditional leaders like the United States and the United Kingdom have slipped in recent years.

Officials and analysts attribute India’s rise to strengthened diplomatic ties, expanded bilateral agreements, and a more favorable global perception of the country’s travel credentials. The enhanced ranking is expected to benefit tourism, business travel, and international collaborations for Indian nationals.

With this upward momentum, India is steadily closing the gap with other emerging economies in terms of travel freedom, marking a notable achievement in its global engagement strategy.
