The Canadian government has increased the maximum allowable weekly off‑campus work hours for international students from 20 to 24 hours, effective immediately. The move aims to provide students with greater flexibility to support their living and study expenses while ensuring academic commitments remain a priority.
The updated rule applies to students holding a valid study permit and enrolled full‑time at a designated learning institution (DLI) in a post‑secondary program of at least six months’ duration, leading to a degree, diploma, or certificate. During scheduled academic breaks, students may work full-time off-campus without restriction, provided they meet eligibility requirements.
Students do not require a separate work permit for off‑campus employment, but their study permit must explicitly allow such work. Employers and students are advised to verify the permit conditions before commencing employment.
The government emphasized that exceeding 24 hours of work per week during regular academic sessions remains a violation of study permit conditions, which could affect future study or immigration applications.
This change reflects Canada’s ongoing efforts to support international students while balancing labor market needs and maintaining the integrity of its educational system.
