A growing majority of Indian travellers are now choosing e-Visas over traditional visa applications, according to a new report by travel platform Atlys. The data shows that 82% of Indian visa applications in 2025 were for e-Visas, up from 79% in 2024.

Top e-Visa Destinations

The report highlights five countries that emerged as the most popular e-Visa destinations for Indians this year:

  • United Arab Emirates (UAE)
  • Vietnam
  • Indonesia
  • Hong Kong
  • Egypt

These destinations are credited with streamlined digital visa processes, encouraging faster and more convenient travel.

Surge in Other Countries

Some nations recorded remarkable growth in e-Visa uptake:

  • Sri Lanka witnessed a nearly sevenfold increase in applications compared to 2024.
  • Georgia reported a 2.6-times rise in applications.

Why Indians Prefer e-Visas

Industry experts point to the speed, flexibility, and convenience of online visa systems as the key reasons for their popularity. E-Visas make it easier for travellers to plan last-minute trips, avoid long consular processes, and explore new destinations.

Global Trend

Currently, over 50 countries across Asia, Europe, Africa, Oceania, and Latin America provide e-Visas or electronic travel authorisations (eTAs) for Indian passport holders. Analysts suggest that countries adopting digital entry systems are more likely to see a sharp rise in tourist inflows from India, one of the world’s fastest-growing outbound travel markets.

The report underlines how the shift towards digital visas is not only reshaping Indian travel habits but also transforming global tourism patterns.
