The Australian Government has launched the Mobility Arrangements for Talented Early-professionals Scheme (MATES), a new visa under the Subclass 403 (Temporary Work) category, starting on November 12, 2024. This visa allows Indian graduates and early-career professionals to live and work in Australia for up to two years. The initiative aims to promote collaboration between Australia and India by fostering skill exchange and career growth in key industries.
To be eligible for the MATES visa, applicants must be aged between 18 and 30, hold a valid Indian passport, and possess a bachelor's degree or higher in a specified field. They also need to demonstrate proficiency in English through an approved language test and must apply from outside Australia. This program focuses on attracting talented professionals from critical sectors that contribute to Australia’s innovation and growth.
The visa provides a 24-month stay, with applicants required to enter Australia within 12 months of the visa being granted. Family members of the main applicant are also allowed to accompany them, with full work rights. The program targets graduates from industries such as renewable energy, mining, engineering, information and communications technology (ICT), artificial intelligence (AI), financial technology (FinTech), and agricultural technology (AgTech).
To apply, candidates must first register for a pre-application ballot, which requires a small fee of AUD $25. After being selected in the ballot, applicants can proceed with their visa application. This scheme benefits both employers and applicants: employers can access a skilled international workforce, while applicants gain valuable international work experience and career advancement opportunities in Australia.
