Australia Tightens Visas to Stop Overstays

Australia is set to implement a new migration reform strategy starting July 1, aimed at tightening regulations to prevent students and other temporary visa holders from extending their stay through loopholes. Clare O’Neil, Australia’s Minister of Home Affairs, underscored the government’s determination to address these issues in international education. She highlighted the Migration Strategy as pivotal in closing these loopholes, emphasizing the need for a migration system that supports skill requirements while eliminating exploitation.

The reform seeks to curb the growing trend of individuals using the visitor-to-student pathway to prolong their stay in Australia. Officials reported a significant rise in such applications, totaling more than 36,000 from July 2023 to May 2024. This move reflects Australia’s commitment to maintaining a fair and efficient migration system that aligns with national skill needs, free from loopholes and abuses.
