The United States has revoked over 300 F-1 student visas in recent weeks as part of an immigration crackdown targeting foreign nationals involved in pro-Palestinian protests on American campuses.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the revocations, stating that the number may have already surpassed 300. He emphasized the administration's intent to identify and take action against individuals disrupting university environments.

The crackdown has led to the detention of several international students, including Mahmoud Khalil, a former Columbia University graduate student and green-card holder who led pro-Palestinian demonstrations. Additionally, a Turkish student at Tufts University was taken into custody, and a 21-year-old Columbia junior and permanent resident has filed a lawsuit to prevent potential deportation.

These actions have raised concerns among foreign students, particularly those involved in political protests since the onset of the Israel-Gaza conflict in October 2023. The Trump administration has specifically targeted institutions like Columbia University, temporarily freezing $400 million in federal funding over allegations of insufficient measures against antisemitism on campus.

In response to these developments, interest in studying in the U.S. has declined among Indian students. Mamta Shekhawat, founder of Gradding.com, noted a significant decrease in enthusiasm, with many students expressing concerns about their ability to re-enter the U.S. after traveling home for vacations.

This situation underscores the heightened scrutiny and challenges faced by international students in the U.S., prompting many to reconsider their educational and professional plans in the country.
