Chile has officially removed the visa requirement for Australian nationals traveling for tourism or business, effective 17 September 2025. Under the new policy, Australians can enter Chile without a visa for stays of up to 90 days, and they may apply for a one-time extension for an additional 90 days while in the country.
This change reverses a visa requirement introduced in December 2019 as a reciprocity measure. Chilean authorities have emphasized that the move is designed to encourage tourism, foster business exchanges, and strengthen bilateral ties between Chile and Australia.
The policy is expected to make travel to Chile simpler and more attractive for Australian tourists, business travelers, and students. Visitors can now more easily explore Chile’s diverse landscapes—from the Atacama Desert in the north to the glaciers of Patagonia in the south—as well as its vibrant cities, historic landmarks, and cultural attractions.
Travelers are advised to ensure their passports are valid for the entire duration of their stay and to comply with any applicable health and safety regulations. While the visa requirement has been lifted, entry remains subject to standard border controls.
This move aligns Chile with other countries in the region offering visa-free access to Australians and reflects the country’s broader strategy to position itself as a prime destination for international travelers and investors.
