China has announced a one-year trial visa-free regime for Russian citizens holding ordinary passports, beginning September 15, 2025, and running until September 14, 2026.
Under the new policy, Russians can stay in China visa-free for up to 30 days per visit for purposes such as tourism, business, cultural exchanges, family visits, or transit. However, paid employment and full-time study remain prohibited.
Travelers must hold passports valid for at least six months and, if staying in private residences, register with local authorities within 24 hours. Authorities also recommend carrying onward or return tickets and proof of accommodation.
The initiative, announced after recent talks between Presidents Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin, is expected to boost tourism and business travel. Russia’s Association of Tour Operators predicts up to a 40% rise in outbound trips to China, while Chinese travel platforms report a surge in flight searches from Moscow to Beijing.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has requested additional clarifications on entry procedures, with detailed guidelines to follow.
The move underscores the strengthening of China-Russia strategic ties, while offering greater mobility and opportunities for citizens of both nations.
