China has unveiled a new K visa aimed at drawing young international professionals in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. The visa, approved by the State Council, will take effect on October 1, 2025.

The K visa is notable for its flexibility. Unlike existing visa categories, applicants will not need a Chinese sponsor or host organization. Eligible candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher in STEM or be actively engaged in study or research at recognized institutions.

Visa holders will be permitted to undertake a wide range of activities in China, including research, study, work, entrepreneurship, and cultural exchange. The visa also allows multiple entries and longer validity periods, giving professionals greater mobility.

The initiative comes as China ramps up efforts to position itself as a global hub for innovation. Demand for AI and other high-tech studies has surged in China, contrasting with declining interest in similar programs in the U.S. Analysts say the move could strengthen China’s competitiveness in attracting top international talent.
