The Australian government has announced new English language testing requirements for visa and migration applicants, effective August 7, 2025. Under the updated policy, only in-person tests conducted at secure, approved centres will be accepted for visa applications — marking a major shift away from remote and online testing.
According to the Department of Home Affairs, the decision aims to enhance test integrity, consistency, and fairness across the immigration system. The change applies to all major visa subclasses, including skilled migration, student, and partner visas.
From August 2025, only the following in-person tests will be recognised:
All online or remotely proctored tests — such as IELTS Online, TOEFL Home Edition, OET@Home, MET Digital, CELPIP Online, and LanguageCert Online — will no longer be valid for new visa applications after the effective date.
However, test results obtained on or before August 6, 2025 will continue to be accepted for up to three years, until August 6, 2028, provided they meet the visa’s specific validity requirements.
Officials say the reform is part of Australia’s ongoing effort to improve migration quality and uphold the credibility of its visa system. “English proficiency is a cornerstone of successful settlement and workforce participation,” the department said in a statement.
Applicants are advised to confirm test requirements for their specific visa category and schedule in-person testing well in advance, as demand is expected to rise closer to the transition date.
