In an unexpected move, U.S. authorities have revoked F-1 student visas for several Indian students, citing minor infractions such as resolved shoplifting cases and traffic violations. The crackdown has left many students scrambling, as they were asked to leave the country immediately.

Designated School Officials (DSOs) were instructed to terminate the students' SEVIS records, which also invalidates their I-20 forms and work permits (EAD cards), effectively ending their legal stay in the U.S.

Immigration lawyers are raising concerns about the proportionality of the move. “Many of these cases had already been settled, yet the students are facing the harshest penalty possible,” one attorney noted.

Students impacted by this action urge others to be cautious and fully aware of how even minor legal issues can have serious immigration consequences. This shift reflects a tightening of visa enforcement protocols and could signal increased scrutiny for all international students moving forward.
