An Indian student aiming to pursue a Master’s in Information Technology at Fordham University has shared their experience of being denied a U.S. F-1 student visa at the Chennai Consulate.

During the interview, the applicant provided detailed information about their educational plans, including their choice of Fordham University and Rutgers University due to specialized courses in AI/ML, system design, and project management. They also presented proof of financial preparedness, including a $71,000 education loan and $8,200 in personal savings, and confirmed current employment at Comcast.

Despite these credentials, the visa officer informed the student, “Unfortunately, we can’t approve your visa today. You may reapply.” The refusal was issued under Section 214(b) of the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act, which requires applicants to demonstrate strong ties to their home country to prove they intend to return after completing their studies.

This case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by Indian students during U.S. visa interviews, where officers increasingly scrutinize applicants’ ties to India, financial stability, and overall intent. Experts advise prospective students to prepare thoroughly, present clear documentation, and demonstrate strong home-country connections to improve their chances of approval.
