In a significant move to strengthen educational and cultural ties with India, Germany has announced that Indian students will now be eligible for gratis visas—free of charge—for certain academic programs.

The initiative applies to short-term school and college visits, study tours, faculty-led exchanges, summer schools, and other temporary academic activities. By removing visa fees, Germany aims to encourage greater student mobility, reduce financial barriers, and promote bilateral cooperation in education.

The decision comes amid growing interest among Indian students in German universities. According to official data, nearly 49,500 Indian students were enrolled in Germany during the 2023–24 winter semester, marking a 15% increase from the previous year. Experts believe the new scheme will further boost participation in short-term programs, which often serve as gateways to long-term academic and professional opportunities.

While the visa fee waiver will ease financial burdens, students will still need to meet standard application requirements, including proof of accommodation, health insurance, financial means, and institutional invitations. Specific eligibility details and application procedures under the gratis visa scheme are expected to be clarified by the German Embassy and the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in the coming weeks.

This initiative is part of the broader India-Germany Comprehensive Migration and Mobility Partnership, designed to facilitate educational exchanges, skill development, and career opportunities for young professionals.
