In a significant diplomatic move, India has introduced a revamped visa module for Afghan nationals, restoring visa services that were halted following the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021. This marks a key step in strengthening people-to-people ties and resuming structured engagement with Afghanistan.

The new visa module officially came into effect on April 29, 2025, replacing the earlier E-Emergency Ex-Miscellaneous Visa system.
Focus on Medical and Humanitarian Needs
Officials stated that medical and humanitarian visas will be prioritized, especially for Afghans seeking urgent treatment in Indian hospitals. “We understand the critical need for medical travel, and India is ready to support such applicants on a priority basis,” said a Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson.
Application and Conversion Process
Afghan nationals currently residing in India on older visa types are required to convert their visas under the new framework. They can do this by visiting the Foreigners Regional Registration Offices (FRROs), including the main one in Delhi.
