Iran Ends Visa-Free Entry for Indians Over Fake Job Claims

Iran has announced the suspension of visa-free entry for Indian nationals following a surge in cases involving fake job promises and the kidnapping of Indian citizens lured to the country. The new rule, effective 22 November 2025, will require all Indian travellers with ordinary passports to obtain a visa in advance for entry or transit through Iran.

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), several criminal networks and agents have been exploiting the visa-waiver facility by offering Indians fraudulent overseas job opportunities. Many victims reportedly travelled to Iran believing they would be transferred to third countries for employment, only to be kidnapped, threatened and subjected to ransom demands.

The MEA has issued a strong advisory urging Indians to exercise “strictest vigilance” while dealing with unverified agents promising jobs or easy travel routes through Iran. Officials clarified that visa-free entry was intended strictly for tourism and was being misused for illegal recruitment.

Airlines operating to and through Iran have also been instructed to verify visas of Indian passengers before boarding. The government continues to work with Iranian authorities to assist affected individuals and prevent further exploitation.
