The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued a cautionary advisory to Indian nationals, warning that visa-free entry to foreign countries does not automatically confer the right to work. The advisory comes amid rising incidents of job scams targeting Indians through fraudulent overseas employment offers.

Officials noted that unscrupulous recruiters are exploiting job seekers with promises of lucrative employment in countries such as Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Iran. Many victims have faced exploitative conditions, including forced labor and illegal activities. The MEA highlighted that over 1,600 Indians have been rescued from such scams in Cambodia and Myanmar alone.

The ministry emphasized adherence to the Emigration Act, 1983, which caps the fees that overseas recruitment agents can charge at ₹30,000 plus GST. Any higher demand should be treated as suspicious. Prospective emigrants are urged to verify agents’ credentials via the official Emigrate portal (www.emigrate.gov.in) and ensure that employment contracts are properly documented with clear terms.

The MEA also advised that individuals receiving seemingly attractive job offers abroad should contact the nearest Indian mission or consulate for guidance. It reiterated that unauthorized work can lead to legal complications and urged vigilance against fraudulent schemes.

The advisory underscores the government’s commitment to protecting Indian nationals abroad and preventing exploitation through illegal or misleading recruitment practices.
