New Zealand Shifts Student Visa Applications Online

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has announced that all international student visa applications will now be processed through its upgraded ADEPT platform, part of the enhanced Immigration Online system. The change, effective 18 August 2025, marks a significant step in the country’s ongoing digital transformation of immigration services.

End of Paper-Based Submissions

INZ confirmed that student visa applications submitted on or before 17 August 2025 under the old system will still be processed. However, applicants with draft applications must finalize and submit them by 17 September 2025, after which incomplete drafts will be deleted. From this date, paper-based applications will no longer be accepted.

The new system applies to all major student visa categories, including:

• English Language Student Visa
• Exchange Student Visa
• Fee-Paying Student Visa
• Pathway Student Visa
• New Zealand Government Scholarship Student Visa
• Foreign Government–Supported Student Visa

Why the Shift Matters

The ADEPT platform is part of a broader seven-year digital modernization program aimed at simplifying the visa process, cutting down paperwork, and ensuring faster, more transparent decision-making. Since its rollout in 2021, the platform has already handled applications for visitor, work, and residence visas.

“Moving student visas into the ADEPT system will provide applicants with clearer communication, faster processing, and greater convenience,” INZ said in a statement.

Advice for Applicants

Authorities are urging students to apply at least three months in advance of their intended study start date, particularly ahead of peak intake seasons in November–March and May–August, to avoid potential delays.
