The European Union has implemented a new “cascade” visa system that allows frequent travelers to the Schengen Area to obtain long-term multiple-entry visas with increasing validity. Effective from July 24, 2025, the initiative is designed to reward travelers who have maintained a strong visa track record and adhered to EU travel rules.

Under this system:

  • Travelers who have received and correctly used two Schengen visas in the past three years may be granted a two-year multiple-entry visa.
  • If the two-year visa is used responsibly, they may become eligible for a five-year multiple-entry visa.
  • These long-term visas allow holders to stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

The system, outlined in Article 24(2) of the EU Visa Code, aims to streamline visa issuance for trusted travelers and reduce bureaucracy for both applicants and consulates. It primarily benefits tourists, business professionals, and family visitors who regularly travel to Schengen countries.

The European Commission emphasized that this move supports stronger ties between the EU and non-EU nationals while maintaining security and migration control. All Schengen Member States are required to follow the cascade rules when processing short-stay visa applications.

Applicants must still meet standard visa requirements, including financial means, travel insurance, and valid purpose of stay. The cascade system applies only to those who have demonstrated consistent and lawful use of their previous Schengen visas.
