South Africa Eases Visa Rules for Indian Tourists
South Africa is implementing significant visa reforms to attract more Indian tourists and skilled workers, aiming to boost its economy and strengthen bilateral ties with India.
Key Initiatives:
- Trusted Tour Operator Scheme (TTOS): Starting January 20, 2025, select tour operators will be authorized to handle visa applications for Indian travelers. This initiative aims to streamline the visa process, reducing approval times to approximately two to three days.
- Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA): South Africa plans to introduce an ETA system, allowing Indian applicants to apply for visas online with expedited processing times. This move comes as the country phases out its previous e-visa system, which did not meet expectations.
- Direct Flight Negotiations: Efforts are underway to establish direct flights between India and South Africa. Meetings with airlines such as IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet are planned to discuss potential routes, which could enhance tourism, trade, and investment between the two nations.
Broader Visa Reforms:
Beyond tourism, South Africa is overhauling its visa policies to attract skilled professionals. A new points-based system for work visas will grant eligibility to individuals with in-demand qualifications. Additionally, a remote work visa is expected to be finalized soon, catering to digital nomads and freelancers.
Economic Objectives:
These reforms aim to increase the proportion of Indian tourists from the current 3.9% to 10% of South Africa's international arrivals by 2025. In 2019, South Africa welcomed over 95,000 Indian visitors, a number that declined to 79,000 in 2023. The government views easing visa processes and establishing direct flights as crucial steps to reverse this trend and stimulate economic growth.
