South Africa is set to launch a new visa scheme in January 2025 aimed at attracting more tourists from China and India. The Trusted Tour Operator Scheme (TTOS) will streamline visa processes for travelers using approved tour operators. Despite the large number of outbound tourists from China and India, these countries currently account for only a small percentage of South Africa's international visitors.

This initiative, developed by the South African Department of Home Affairs in collaboration with the Department of Tourism, is expected to significantly boost tourism from these nations. Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber emphasized that this scheme is part of a broader effort to position the department as an economic enabler, with the ultimate goal of implementing a fully automated, secure digital visa processing system.

The scheme aims to fast-track visa approvals for tourists from China and India, addressing current disparities in visitor numbers and enhancing the overall tourism sector. Details regarding the regulations and application process for tour operators are expected to be released soon, ahead of the 2025 rollout.

The introduction of TTOS reflects South Africa's commitment to revitalizing its tourism industry by simplifying visa processes for key markets. This initiative is part of a larger vision to modernize and streamline visa procedures, making it easier for tourists from major source countries to visit South Africa. The government anticipates that this will lead to a significant increase in tourist arrivals from China and India, contributing to the country's economic growth and tourism development.
