As demand for overseas education grows, student visas remain a key hurdle for many aspiring international students. A recent comparison of leading study destinations highlights how visa rules differ across the UK, Canada, Germany, Australia, and Ireland.
United Kingdom
The UK requires students to apply for a visa within six months of receiving a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). Processing typically takes three weeks when applied from outside the country, making it one of the faster systems.
Canada
Canada’s visa process has become more stringent. In addition to a Letter of Acceptance (LOA), applicants now need a provincial attestation letter. From September 2025, proof of financial capacity has risen to CAD 22,895, increasing the cost burden on families.
Germany
Germany mandates proof of funds through a “blocked account” showing at least €11,904 for one year (about €992 per month). Students must also present an admission letter from a recognized institution, which remains a decisive step in the approval process.
Australia
Australia operates under the Subclass 500 Student Visa. In 2024, the “Genuine Student” (GS) requirement replaced the previous Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) statement. Applicants must demonstrate sufficient funds, meet English-language requirements, and provide a Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE).
Ireland
For courses exceeding 90 days, Ireland requires students to apply for a “D” Long Stay visa. Applicants must show proof of at least €10,000 in funds, verified admission, and in some cases register with local immigration authorities upon arrival.
Global Trends
Despite differences, common requirements across these countries include financial stability, enrollment at a recognized institution, and proof of genuine study intent. Policymakers continue to adjust visa systems to balance international student demand with national interests.
