In a move aimed at enhancing support for international students, the New Zealand government has announced that student visa holders will now be permitted to work up to 25 hours per week during term time, an increase from the previous 20-hour limit.

The new rule takes effect from November 3, 2025, and will automatically apply to all student visas issued on or after that date. Students holding older visas can also benefit by applying for a variation of conditions or by obtaining a new visa reflecting the updated allowance.

According to the Ministry of Education, this reform is part of the country’s International Education Going for Growth Plan, which aims to make New Zealand a more attractive study destination while maintaining education quality and student welfare.

The 25-hour limit will also extend to students in approved exchange and study-abroad programmes, as well as certain dependents and holders of the Skilled Migrant Category Interim Visa. However, secondary school students in Years 12 and 13 will still require written permission from their school and parents to work during term time.

Officials said the update reflects the government’s commitment to offering international students greater flexibility to manage living costs and gain local work experience.

For current students wishing to switch to the new work limit, Immigration New Zealand will process applications for variation at a fee of NZ $325.

This policy change comes amid ongoing efforts by New Zealand to strengthen its international education sector, which contributes significantly to the nation’s economy and workforce development.
