In a groundbreaking move toward environmental sustainability, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced the launch of the Blue Residency Visa — a 10-year residency program specifically designed to attract and retain individuals who have demonstrated exceptional contributions to environmental protection and sustainability.
The initiative, introduced by the UAE Cabinet, underscores the country’s commitment to positioning itself as a global leader in climate action and green innovation. It is part of the UAE’s broader strategy to foster a sustainable future and advance its role in addressing global environmental challenges.
Recognizing Global Environmental Leaders
The Blue Residency is open to individuals both inside and outside the UAE who have made significant contributions in fields related to the environment, climate change, sustainability, and renewable energy. Eligible candidates include:
Application and Nomination Process
Applications for the Blue Residency can be submitted through the official platform of the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP). Interested individuals may apply directly or be nominated by relevant UAE authorities.
Applicants from outside the UAE will be granted a six-month multiple-entry visa to facilitate the completion of residency formalities. The nomination process includes a review of the candidate's contributions to environmental causes, with a focus on their impact and innovation.
A Strategic Step Toward Climate Leadership
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, emphasized the significance of the Blue Visa during its launch:
“The environment is a top priority for the UAE, and recognizing those who dedicate their lives to protecting it is a national duty. The Blue Residency affirms our commitment to supporting those who support our planet.”
The Blue Residency follows the UAE's earlier Golden and Green Visa initiatives, which aim to attract talent and drive development across vital sectors. The new visa is expected to strengthen the UAE’s position as a magnet for global talent working on sustainability and climate action.
Global Impact
The launch of the Blue Residency Visa coincides with growing international concern about climate change and the need for long-term sustainable solutions. It also complements the UAE’s role as host of major climate events, including COP28, and its pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
With this initiative, the UAE invites environmental leaders to join its efforts in building a more resilient, sustainable, and innovative future.
