The United Arab Emirates has reaffirmed its commitment to the freelance visa programme, dismissing widespread social media rumours that the scheme has been suspended. Authorities confirmed that freelance and “Green Residency” visas remain fully operational, though new measures have been introduced to tighten the application review process.
According to the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA-Dubai), led by Lt. Gen. Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, the move is part of a broader effort to curb misuse and enhance verification procedures. Officials said that several applications were found to contain false information or were being traded illegally through unauthorised agents.
“The UAE continues to welcome skilled professionals, entrepreneurs, and creatives under its freelance visa system,” Al Marri stated. “The updated procedures are designed to regulate—not restrict—this growing segment.”
The new review process will include stricter background checks, enhanced validation of professional credentials, and tighter monitoring of freelance permits issued through free zones and residency channels. Applicants may experience slightly longer processing times as a result.
The UAE’s freelance or Green Residency visa allows self-employed individuals to live and work without a local sponsor, supporting professionals across industries such as media, design, IT, and consultancy. The scheme remains a cornerstone of the country’s efforts to diversify its economy and attract global talent.
Authorities have urged applicants to rely only on official government portals and licensed agencies for visa applications to avoid scams or misinformation.
