A major accident occurred on the Sarkhej–Gandhinagar Highway (SG Highway) on Tuesday morning when a structural component of an under-construction flyover collapsed, leaving two people injured.

The incident took place around 9:45 AM near the stretch between YMCA Club and Karnavati Club. A girder from the flyover came loose and struck a passing biker, critically injuring him. Another commuter also sustained injuries. Both victims were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Safety Concerns Raised

Authorities confirmed that barricades had been placed around the construction site. However, eyewitnesses argued that the safety measures were insufficient, with some insisting the road should have been closed during ongoing work. The collapse caused traffic disruption for nearly half an hour before normal flow was restored.

Broader Infrastructure Issues

The mishap has reignited public concern about the safety and quality of Ahmedabad’s flyover projects. In recent years:

  • The Hatkeshwar flyover, built in 2017, was declared unsafe and is currently being demolished.
  • The Naroda Patiya flyover, planned as the city’s longest, remains only 36% complete due to delays in land acquisition and planning.
  • Opposition leaders have also accused municipal authorities of altering bridge designs and ignoring expert recommendations, raising questions about accountability.

Official Response

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is expected to conduct a safety review of the SG Highway project. No immediate responsibility has been assigned, but the incident has intensified scrutiny of ongoing infrastructure works across the city.
