The UK government will introduce tougher English language rules for migrants from 8 January 2026. Applicants for skilled worker, scale-up, and high potential individual (HPI) visas must reach an A-level (B2) English standard, higher than the current GCSE (B1) level. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the change will help migrants integrate better and contribute to British society.

The new rule is part of wider immigration reforms aimed at making the system more “controlled and fair.” Migrants will take in-person English tests at Home Office-approved centres, and skilled worker applicants must earn at least £41,700 a year.

Experts say the move could reduce migration by up to 100,000 people annually, but some argue it may make it harder for employers to find skilled workers. Immigration lawyer Afsana Akhtar said the higher English requirement is “unfair,” noting that many locals might also fail an A-level English test.

Other reforms include cutting the post-study work period for international students to 18 months, raising the Immigration Skills Charge for employers, and doubling the HPI visa cap to 4,000. The government says the changes will help attract skilled talent while keeping migration under control.
