The United States Consulate in Chennai has officially reopened and resumed full operations from October 23, 2025, after a temporary closure for renovation and infrastructure upgrades. The consulate is now processing all categories of non-immigrant and immigrant visas, along with providing American Citizen Services (ACS).
According to the announcement, applicants can once again schedule new visa interviews, attend rescheduled appointments, and submit pending documents or passports. The move is expected to significantly reduce visa appointment backlogs and ease travel planning for students, professionals, and business travelers across South India.
The consulate has also reinstated its services for U.S. citizens, including passport renewals, Consular Reports of Birth Abroad (CRBA), notarial assistance, and emergency services.
The U.S. Consulate in Chennai is one of the busiest in India, serving the states of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, and the Union Territory of Puducherry. Its reopening marks a major step in restoring normal visa and consular operations in the region, providing smoother and faster access to U.S. services.
