The United States has announced sweeping changes to its visa process for Indian applicants, bringing higher costs, stricter security measures, and the elimination of several conveniences that previously eased travel to America.
No More Third-Party Passport Pickups
From August 1, 2025, applicants will no longer be allowed to authorize others to collect their passports after visa stamping. Passports must be collected in person, or applicants can opt for a new paid delivery service costing ₹1,200. The only exception applies to minors, whose parents or legal guardians may collect passports with proper written authorization.
$250 Visa Integrity Fee Introduced
Beginning October 1, 2025, a new $250 “Visa Integrity Fee” will be added to most non-immigrant visa categories, including tourist (B-1/B-2), student (F, M), work (H-1B), and exchange (J) visas.
Interview Waiver (Dropbox) Curtailed
The popular interview waiver program, which allowed many to renew visas without in-person interviews, will be sharply reduced from September 2, 2025. Now, most applicants—including children under 14 and seniors over 79—must appear in person for interviews.
Impact on Indian Travelers
Experts warn that these updates could increase wait times for visa appointments and create additional financial burdens for frequent travelers, students, and professionals seeking U.S. opportunities. The U.S. government has defended the move, citing stronger security protocols and compliance monitoring as the primary goals.
