  • What Is Schengen Visa?

The Schengen Visa is a type of visa that allows travelers to visit and travel within the Schengen Area, which is a group of 29 European countries that have abolished passport and other types of border control at their mutual borders. This means that a person with a Schengen Visa can move freely between these countries without having to go through immigration checks at the border. To obtain a Schengen Visa, applicants need to apply at the embassy or consulate of the country they intend to visit or spend most of their time in. The visa allows for a stay of up to 90 days within a 180-day period and can be used for tourism, business, or other purposes. However, the visa does not grant the holder the right to work or study in the Schengen Area.

To be safe, apply at least two weeks before your travel date, and earlier if it’s during holidays. Remember, the Embassy or Consulate makes the visa decisions, not VFS Global.

Important notes:

  • Consider the duration of stay before applying. If planning to stay longer than 6 months, apply for a Residence Permit. Visa “C” is valid for up to 90 days, and Visa “D” for 91 to 180 days. Both visas cannot be extended in Austria.
  • Any representative must provide a letter of authorization from the applicant and attach a copy of their valid photo ID to the application.
  • The applicant is responsible for all contents of the application.
  • Applications cannot be submitted earlier than 6 months before departure.
  • Submit applications at least 1 month before the intended travel date to avoid passport return to VFS due to late submission.
  • The applicant agrees to use VFS Global Services Pvt. Ltd. for applying for a Schengen Visa at the Austrian Desk.
  • Additional documents may be requested during the application process, and applicants may be called for an interview if necessary.
  • Ensure all required documents are submitted as per the checklist provided to avoid application rejection.
