  • First, figure out which visa you need and see if you qualify for it.
  • Find out what documents you need to submit, how long it might take, and the fees.
  • Make sure your application follows the rules for your visa category.
  • If your documents aren't in English, you might need translations before applying.

  • Download the visa application form.
  • Fill it out.
  • Print the completed form.
  • Take the form, along with the necessary documents for your chosen visa category, to the Visa Application Centre for submission.

  • After filling out your visa form, you need to set up an appointment at a Visa Application Center for fingerprinting and a photo, called 'biometric information.'
  • Once your appointment is scheduled, you'll get an email confirming it, along with an appointment letter.
  • If you're applying as a family or group, each person should book their own appointment.

  • After sending your application, you'll have to pay the visa fee. If you print the form and bring it to the Visa Application Centre, you can pay when you go for your appointment.
  • The visa fee is paid at Visa Application Centre.

  • You'll get an email notification when your decision is back at the Visa Application Centre. If you prefer SMS updates or can't access email easily, check if this option is offered at the Visa Application Centre you're going to.
  • You can also check your visa application status online using the Reference Number from your invoice/receipt and your last name.

Once your visa application decision is made, you have two options for getting your passport:

  • Collecting in Person: Bring the receipt from the Visa Application Centre and a valid government ID. If allowed, you can send a representative with a letter of authorization signed by you, along with the receipt and their ID.
  • Courier Delivery: For an extra fee, your passport can be sent to you via courier.

    • You must meet certain integration and language requirements, which may include demonstrating proficiency in one of the national languages (Luxembourgish, French, or German).
    • Maintain stable and regular income, health insurance, and accommodation during your stay.
  2. Compile Required Documents:
    • Gather all necessary documentation, which may include: Valid passport and residence permits, Proof of language proficiency, Proof of continuous residence in Luxembourg, Evidence of financial stability, Criminal record clearance certificate, Proof of integration, such as participation in community activities.
  3. Submit Application:
    • You can request a permanent residence permit for an EU citizen’s family member from the Immigration Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs (MAEE).
  4. How to Apply:
    • You can submit your application for a permanent residence permit through two methods:
      • Online using MyGuichet.lu.
      • By post using a specific application form (available under ‘Forms / Online services’).
  5. Online Application:
    • To apply online, you can use one of these methods for authentication:
      • A LuxTrust product (like Smartcard, Signing stick, or Token).
      • An electronic identity card (eID).
      • Without authentication.
    • You can also submit the application via the MyGuichet.lu mobile app, but you’ll need to:
      • Have a private eSpace.
      • Link your private eSpace with the MyGuichet.lu mobile app.
    • Remember to attach the required supporting documents to your online application.
  6. Application by Post:
    • If you choose to apply by post, send the completed application form along with the specified supporting documents to the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs.
  7. Processing Time:
    • The permanent residence permit is typically issued within 6 months from the date of application.
    • During this time, the receipt confirming your residence permit application is considered valid as a residence permit for a maximum of 6 months.

    • The permanent residence card remains valid for 10 years and automatically renews itself every 10 years.
